Organic friction pads

FTL123 flexible organic friction material

FTL123 is a non-asbestos friction material. It is a flexible, semi-cured, moulded product and is manufactured from a variety of mineral fibres and other non-metallic substances in random dispersion. FTL123 has a marginally lower friction coefficient when compared with FTL132 but has been developed to retain its excellent friction stability and wear resistant properties. This material ground on both surfaces during manufacture and is therefore suitable for bonding on either side.

As supplied, FTL123 is sufficiently flexible to make fitting to curved metal parts a relatively simple operation, after which the heat generated in service will increase its strength and stiffness. Alternatively, FTL123 can be heat treated in an oven at a temperature of between 200 & 230 °C for a period of not less than 60 minutes, either before or after fitting.

If supplied in the fully heat treated form (fully cured) it is known by the reference FTL124

FTL123 is not suitable for operating in oil.

Applications

  • Automotive rear brake shoes
  • Industrial drum and band-brakes
  • Miscellaneous industrial devices
  • Crane and excavator brake and clutch linings.

Engineering capability backed by controlled manufacture and inspection

Case example: connecting engineering, material and manufacture.

SDTS approached FTL after the original aircraft brake pad was no longer available. FTL redesigned the pad, established a replacement material route and manufactured a component aligned with the stated aeronautical technical requirements, supporting SDTS's modification-certification process.

“To continue flying our aircraft, we approached FTL to find replacement solutions for our brake pad problem, as the original part was no longer available on the market. The quality of our discussions, from both a technical and commercial standpoint, FTL's responsiveness in redesigning the pad with a material that meets aeronautical technical requirements, and their ability to adapt to our aeronautical environment allowed us to certify a modification applicable to our aircraft. The quality of the manufactured product is remarkable. Thanks to FTL, we can continue to fly, land, and brake safely.”

Olivier Moulin SDTS

Established in 2003, FTL's integrated chain is supported by controlled manufacture, inspection and traceability, and held to recognised quality, environmental, safety and supply-chain standards.

Bring us the application, drawing or performance problem.

Tell Friction Technology what the component or friction system needs to do. A short initial brief is enough to start. The right technical and commercial people then join the conversation to understand the operating conditions, available information and required next step.

Optional drawing or specification upload. No long technical questionnaire at this stage.
